I came across the following quote about a couple of weeks ago and I think it summarises the frustration for proprietary s/w users, and explains in part why more organisations are turning to open source s/w.

I first heard about Moodle at a web essentials conference back in 2004. Moodle is an open source Learning Management System that is giving other proprietary LMSs a run for their money. Check it out at http://www.moodle.org.
